The well-known gear hobbing process today represents the de facto standard for gears production (both straight or helical). Thanks to low tool cost, new hobbing machines and new coatings, today a very high volume of production can be obtained at a reasonable cost per piece . The hobbing process also allows machining of hardened gears thanks to skiving hobs that can make gears between 58 and 64 HRC, effectively replacing shaving and grinding.
